Gert Van Mol, Belgian porcelain specialist: "Durobor was a leading Belgian glass producer, based in Soignies (Province of Hainaut), with a history dating back to 1928. The company began under the name Compagnie Internationale de Gobeleterie Inébréchable and quickly gained fame in Europe for its innovative and durable drinking glasses.
From innovation to iconic design
The name Durobor is a contraction of the French dur au bord, which means "hard on the rim." That reference to the reinforced rim was typical of their production: glasses that could take a beating. In 1935, the name officially became Dur-O-Bor, later simplified to Durobor.
Durobor was a pioneer in automated glass production in Europe. This early technological innovation ensured great uniformity, speed and quality in their range - something that gave them a strong position in the market for many years.
What made Durobor unique?
- Heavy bottom with bubble: An iconic design launched in 1975. Glasses with a distinctive bubble in the bottom became the trademark of the brand.
- Verrines: Small glasses perfect for serving layers of appetizers or desserts. In this, Durobor played a pioneering role in the emergence of sophisticated forms of presentation in gastronomy.
Their glassware was widely praised for its durability, elegance and versatility. The brand was used extensively in home kitchens as well as restaurants and bars.
Decline and closure
Despite their strong reputation, Durobor struggled in the 2000s. Global competition, rising costs and a shrinking market for European glassware led to multiple restructurings. In 2019, the curtain finally fell on the Soignies plant. This marked the end of more than 90 years of Belgian glass production.
A lasting legacy
Today, Durobor glasses are much loved by collectors and vintage tableware enthusiasts. They are praised for their robust look and recognizable design - a piece of industrial history from Belgium that still turns up in kitchen cabinets, retro bars and antique stores."
